Linux Desktop Engineer

Description:

Under the general supervision of the Mgr, Workplace Solutions, the Linux Desktop Engineer is responsible for the day to day development, design, implement and support for Linux client technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • ​Develop, design, implement and support End User Computing standards for Linux client technologies.​
  • Responsible for the creation and ongoing development of Linux builds for client endpoints.​
  • Operations and maintenance of a Linux desktop image and associated applications.​
  • Develop & maintain documentation of existing & newly created environments.​
  • Maintain knowledgebase documentation to enable effective support of Linux environment by Service Desk and Deskside Services resources.​
  • Work directly with highly-technical Linux user base to continually improve the end-user experience.​
  • Perform Linux systems administration tasks using approved tools and utilities.​
  • Package, (re)package and distribute software and software updates to Linux client systems.​
  • Automate administration routines using scripts and approved tools.
  • ​Continuously remediate security vulnerabilities and patch systems in accordance with Change Management procedures.​
  • Work collaboratively with VMware Engineers to create, implement and maintain Linux client image Virtual Desktop infrastructure.​
  • Test and integrate new client hardware for use with Linux image.​
  • Responsible for 3rd level Incident Management, Request Management, Change Management and Problem Management in regards to Linux-related client issues.​
  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with infrastructure and project management colleagues, strategic vendors and key business partners.
  • ​Participate in on-call rotation for support outside of working hours (occasional nights and weekends).​​

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.​
  • Minimum 5 years Linux OS experience, preferably with Ubuntu and RedHat.​
  • Minimum 3 years scripting and automation experience (Bash, Python, and PowerShell).​
  • Prior experience with Active Directory, LDAP authentication and related technologies.​
  • Prior experience with enterprise IT security concepts, endpoint encryption, system hardening, vulnerability and patch management.​
  • Experience with Linux system management tools such as Landscape and Ansible (Landscape highly desired).
  • ​Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.​
  • Experience presenting technical solutions to technical and non-technical audiences.​
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem resolution and root-cause analysis skills.​
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines as required.​​

Senior DevOps Engineer

Role Summary:​

Hands On Work Required​Under the general supervision of the Manager of Cloud Computing and Infrastructure Strategy at VWGoA (Volkswagen Group of America), this position is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of VWGoA Cloud Services. This is an engineer for Cloud Infrastructure, Deployment and Development operations through automation. This role will create the automation of repeatable processes where possible, and work with the team to design, build and support a robust internal PAAS (platform as a service) capability.​As a Senior position, the expectation is to be an example to the team and help with customer facing planning discussions.​

The Sr. DevOps Engineer will be involved in the Infrastructure, Deployment and Development operations through automation for the digital systems and supporting software tools.​

Role Responsibilities:

Write, Review, and Approve Automation and Infrastructure code.
Work with Project teams to build automation pipelines for application environment deployments​
    • Provide 3rd level operational support for Cloud Infrastructure sites.
    • ​Provide infrastructure architectural design for IT Cloud deployments
    • ​Evaluate potential single-points of failure within the Cloud infrastructure; Recommend risk-mitigation next steps to build out a high availability solution.​
    • Will be expected to interface and support incident resolution with 1st and 2nd level support teams with all IT problems high priority issues related to Cloud infrastructure.​
    • Apply experience, technical knowledge and innovative techniques to resolve complex Operations challenges.​​

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent real life experience in IT infrastructure / App development 

Sr. Middleware Engineer

The Integration and Middleware team is responsible for installs, configurations, maintenance, upgrades, hardware migrations, patch management, troubleshooting, repair, performance tuning, incident / problem resolution, as well as monitoring and providing 24×7 support. In addition, the group engages in setup, deploys, security management, capacity management, and will coordinate backup / restore and system recovery activities. It also supports infrastructure architecture, application integration, projects setup and deployments.​​

This resource will perform, install, upgrade firmware and configure IBM DataPower Appliances, WebSphere/HCL eCommerce on OpenShift. He/she will provide administration and operational support, firmware updates roadmap, troubleshoot, alerts, monitoring and automated recovery, transactions traceability and tracking, issue resolution related to data exchange, data transformations, access, performance and capacity management.​

  • API Connect, Datapower
    • ​Strong understanding of API Connect, DataPower Architectural Design Patterns, Integrating and Securing Services across Domains, Physical architecture and Installation, Configuration architecture, Enterprise Service Bus, SOA, DataPower Service, Web services and policy management, Protocols – when to use what and protocol conversion, Governance and policies, when to use and when not to use DataPower, or API Connect.​
  • WebSphere/HCL eCommerce, OpenShift, ICP, Docker, Kubernetes​
    • Upgraded skills on learning and implementing the Docker Containers, Kubernetes, ICP (IBM Cloud Private) for the first time implemented in the Volkswagen for the critical application, POC (Parts on Command) application Migration.​Upgrading skill on OpenShift, technologies and planning to migrate the Parts application form ICP (IBM cloud Private) to OpenShift.​
  • MQ, IIB:
    • Experience in IBM WebSphere MQ, IIB 9.0, ACE 11/12 and its related Systems Administration on Solaris/Linux/Unix environment.
    • ​Strong understanding on IBM MQ Series, IIB architecture and administration, Installation, configuration and maintenance.​Knowledge in WebSphere suite, XML, WSDL, Web service (SOAP and HTTP), Message Broker, command line/scripting, SOAP UI tool.​
    • Hands on experience on WMQ and IIB Installation, Patching & Upgrade activity on Windows, Linux platforms.​
    • Good analytical and problem solving skills to troubleshoot systems problems​Experience in shell scripting is mandatory.​​
  • Monitor application infrastructure for service availability supporting business operations.
  • Understanding and working experience of IT Service Management processes such as Incident, Problem and  Change.​
  • Provide technical solution that meets on-demand business changes/needs.
